It seems likely that no living man has ever known more about ghosts than
Inspector Jacob Slade of Wight Lane. Before Slade joined the force, it was common
practice to continue hunting for wizard criminals as long as they were alive. Slade
went further, hauling even the dead into court to face trial. It had long been believed
that it was impossible to bind or fetter a ghost, but enchanted handcuffs of his own
invention -- 'Slade's Bracelets' -- proved otherwise. Though the practice of trying
ghosts was abolished in 1930, Slade's tireless efforts impressed many in the Spectral
Realm, and Slade's bureau, known as Wight Lane, became the first
Ghost Division of the Wizard Police Department.
